For Don McGowan, the creation of art photographically in nature and the experience of his connection to the natural world are one and the same. In both, he finds his own path through the creative process. He has been a professional nature photographer for twenty years and has taught in some of the most highly respected arts and crafts schools in the East, including the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, the CraftSummer Program at Miami University of Ohio, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee.  He has been published in a wide variety of media, including National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps, Preservation, Smokies Life, Smoky Mountain Living, Outdoor Photographer, and National Parks Conservation Association magazines, and the annual reports and other print formats for numerous non-profit cultural and environmental organizations. His fine art prints are found in private collections and he is represented in several galleries throughout western North Carolina. He also leads photography workshops in beautiful places throughout the country

Don’s purpose as an artist and as an instructor is to share the beauty of the natural world through photography. When he’s not on the road teaching workshops Don shares his life with Bonnie Cooper near the head of Beaverdam Valley in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He can be contacted at
